Grand Chase is a mobile game created for Scout Centre 55 Vatra Praha

Introduction #

Grand Chase was developed over a period of approximately two months. The development was done exclusively by Aerift Games together with several organizers of the 55 Vatra Scout Center.

Our friends from Scout Center had idea to use modern technology in a Grand Chase event. This eventually led to the completion and launch of the mobile game that will be used for the 2023 edition of the Grand Chase.

Technology #

Grand Chase was developed using the game engine Godot. For the server, the Python programming language was used.

Brief description #

Grand Chase is a mobile app that uses QR codes placed at real locations. For this year’s edition, it was played in the centre of Prague. Players are divided into one of two factions (blue and red) at the start of the game. The player also has the option to choose whether or not to play for the central faction.

The idea of the HQ is that it is a kind of headquarters. It is tasked with coordinating the various player groups, determining reinforcements, monitoring the progress of the game and unlocking victory points. It’s practically a simulation of a military headquarters.

Everyone else who is not in the HQ can walk around the game zone and use QR code scanning to perform all sorts of actions. These actions include:

  • Taking a point/territory
  • Interacting with friendly territory
  • Interacting with enemy territory
  • Attacking an enemy group
  • Travel across dimensions

The entire map is divided into 2 identical maps. Each of these maps denotes one of the two dimensions (white and black). Thus, the players’ task is to visit each zone and occupy it from the enemy faction. Each captured zone generates resources every 5 minutes, and with these resources a particular team can move closer to victory.

Playing style #

Grand Chase is somewhat unique in that it can only be played at certain times. The app is dependent on QR codes that allow interaction with territory, quests and so on. Without these QR codes, the app can be used on a limited basis.

Future #

There were a few thoughts about using a mobile game/app for the next Grand Chase (or another event altogether). Whether this will be the case is not yet certain and you have to be surprised :)
